Everything Bajan for Crop Over opening gala Barbadians and visitors can look forward to one of the most fun-filled, action packed and exciting events at the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent this Saturday, July 6, in the historic Bridgetown.The team at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) has designed a specially curated package of events that will get started at 9 a.m. in Golden Square Freedom Park. From the very young to the most mature will find a host of activities to delight them.The evening of celebration to mark the official start of Crop Over 2024, will also spotlight the 50th anniversary of the Caribbean’s sweetest summer festival. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who will address the patrons and will also declare the official launch of Crop Over 2024 in National Heroes Square.Among the most anticipated aspects of the ceremony will be two colourful parades with more than 250 beautifully outfitted participants.The first parade and traditional showcase will be led by the Sons of God Apostolic Spiritual Baptist Church along with the Dray Cart, traditional characters, historic costumes, tuk bands, the much-loved Decorated Cart with the last canes, the Promenade of fancy and traditional dresses from designer Wayne Smith, stilt walkers, the King and Queen National Dress accompanied by their junior King and Queen, costumed folk characters, plantation workers, drummers and the Zouave Band.The second parade, which is a more modern take on the festival will feature a Mother Sally Fashion Parade with celebrated designer Pauline Bellamy. Stilt walkers in new designs will mesmerise patrons as they move to the infectious rhythms of the Iron Massive, Pan Round De Neck, Live trumpeters and tuk band. The 50th anniversary Cheerleaders, masqueraders, and special 50th anniversary flag persons will round out the second parade. Patrons can also look forward to the Cultural Village, the finals of the Indigenous Cultural Heritage Schools competitions, as well as a host of demonstrations, workshops, folk choirs, stick licking and stilt walking demonstrations by locals and guests from Trinidad and Tobago, spoken word artistes, community performances, as well as emerging instrumental and vocal artistes.All this is being made possible with the sponsorship of communications company Digicel Barbados. Coordinating this massive gala is NCF Event Planner Karen Pestaina, who said the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent is going to be the biggest and best of everything Barbadian and an unforgettable experience for the entire family.
