While Combermerians stake claim to him, music lovers all across the Caribbean revere James Millington as an uncompromising music master and violinist par excellence.
A graduate of the Conservatory of Musical Art, he was awarded the Violin Teachers diploma in 1930 in New York. Returning to Barbados, he toured the Caribbean as a concert violinist and shared his remarkable skills with the pupils of the Combermere School where he was instrumental in introducing music to the syllabus, up to the GCE level. However, performing was still his passion and he founded the Combermere String Group and Barbados Strings which later became the Barbados Symphonia.
The James Millington Award in Music is presented to the individual or group capable of a live performance that is flawless in its execution, unmatched for melody and unmatched in its ability to make our spirits soar at the magic of music!
