“Sugar: Mek it Sweet”

The Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, this year is intertwined with a Vintage Calypso Tent and will be held at Portvale Sugar Factory on Saturday July 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm. In commemoration of the Season of Emancipation a procession starts at Rock Hall Freedom Park, the site of the first free village and travels to the home of sugar production, the site of “Sugar mek we Free”, Portvale Sugar Factory.

On arrival at the Sugar Factory, patrons will be treated to a guided tour of the factory and enjoy the process of “making sugar”. The audience will then indulge in culinary delights, arts, crafts and spirits while being transported to the time when Sugar was King, through the re-imagination and re-enactment of life and work on the plantation, highlighting the blessing of the Last Canes. Finally, their appetites will be satisfied with the Vintage Calypso tent paying homage to the Pic-o-de-Crop Competition.
