
CARIFESTA XV
THEME: “CARIBBEAN ROOTS, GLOBAL EXCELLENCE”
CULTURAL CANVAS: BODY ART BATTLE
Date: August 26, 2025
Location: HAIR-ITAGE Pavilion, Grand Market, Waterford, Barbados
This battle challenges body artists to design and apply the best temporary partial body art concept based on the CARIFESTA XV theme, “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence”. Winners will be selected by judging panel.
Acceptable media:
Participants may use any non-permanent, skin-safe materials, including:
- Body paint and professional body makeup
- Henna or Jagua
- Skin-safe markers and pigments
- Cosmetic glitter, gems, jewels, foil, feathers, and cultural accessories
- Temporary adhesive items (e.g., rhinestones or appliqués)
Note: Use of airbrushing is allowed, but all paints and adhesives must be safe for prolonged skin contact.
Who Can Enter:
- Open to experienced and emerging artists in the fields of makeup artistry, body painting, henna, fine art, or design.
- Must provide your own live model.
- All participants must follow strict hygiene and safety protocols.
Competition Guidelines:
- Artists will have 1.5 hours to complete their partial body artwork on-stage.
- Artwork must be started and completed during the competition time
- Each artist must work independently (no assistant painters).
- All designs must cover at least two full sections of the body (e.g., chest, back, face, arm, or leg).
- Body Art must be placed in areas of the body that are suitable for a child-friendly, public exhibition space. Artwork with explicit placement or offensive imagery will not be permitted.
Judging Criteria:
- Creativity and Originality – Design should demonstrate imagination and a fresh artistic perspective that sets it apart.
- Technical Execution and Precision – The design must be cleanly applied, displaying an overall professional technique.
- Composition and Visual Impact – The overall layout should be well-balanced, visually engaging, and harmonious in design, scale, and detail.
- Cultural Interpretation – It should thoughtfully reflect CARIFESTA’s Theme, “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence” in a meaningful & recognisable way.
Prizes:
- 1st Place: BDS $1,500
- 2nd Place: BDS $1,000
- 3rd Place: BDS $500
