CARIBBEAN ROOTS: TATTOO SHOWDOWN

Location: HAIR-ITAGE Pavilion, Grand Market, Waterford, Barbados
This is the elite challenge for professional tattoo artists from across the region. Create a powerful, permanent work of art in just 45 minutes that reflects the story and spirit of Caribbean people. Winners will be selected by judging panel.
Who Can Enter:
- Professional tattoo artists with studio experience or certification
- Must bring your model/client
- Must use professional equipment and hygienic practices
- Must have a valid medical certificate
Competition Guidelines:
- Each artist has 45 minutes to complete the tattoo
- Tattoo must be started and completed during competition time
- Artists are responsible for bringing their equipment and supplies.
- No assistants allowed
- Coloured or black & grey tattoos are allowed
- All equipment must meet professional hygiene standards. Artists must wear gloves and use disposable/sterilized materials only
- Clients must be 18+ years old with valid photo ID.
- BOTH artist and client must sign a release form (download available).
- Tattoos must be placed in areas of the body that are suitable for a child-friendly, public exhibition space. Tattoos with explicit placement or offensive imagery will not be permitted.
Judging Criteria:
- Creativity and Originality – Designs should demonstrate imagination and a fresh artistic perspective that sets the tattoo apart.
- Technical Execution and Precision – The tattoo must be cleanly applied, with steady linework, consistent shading, and overall professional technique.
- Composition and Visual Impact – The overall layout should be well-balanced, visually engaging, and harmonious in design, scale, and detail.
- Cultural Interpretation – The design should thoughtfully reflect Caribbean culture, identity, or history in a meaningful and recognisable way.
Prizes:
- 1st Place: BDS $2,500
- 2nd Place: BDS $1,500
- 3rd Place: BDS $1,000
