Mikey to Compete in the International Power Soca Monarch Competition Semi-Finals

The 2012 quadruple crown monarch, Michael ‘Mikey’ Mercer will be flying the Bajan flag high this weekend when he competes in the International Power Soca Monarch Competition Semi-Finals. Featuring some of the biggest soca artistes from around the region, the Semi-Finals is scheduled for this Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Arima Velodrome in Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaking at a special presentation hosted by the National Cultural Foundation on Thursday at its West Terrace headquarters, Mikey said he was honoured to be representing Barbados and that he felt that he had a very good chance of reaching the Finals. “I am looking forward to sharing the stage with the other soca stars from across the region.” He added that he is being mentored by Blood who had experience as a competitor in Trinidad with his former band Square One.

The soca king received financial support from the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth and airline tickets from the National Cultural Foundation for him and his team.

During the presentation, Mikey also expressed his appreciation for the support received from the Government and the NCF and said that the contribution will go a long way in ensuring that he is properly prepared for the competition.

Mikey, who burst onto the local calypso scene in 2004 and created a historical feat last year, will be competing with the crème de la crème of soca with his winning song No Behaveya. The song, which was penned by Mikey and produced by his business partner Blood, won the Party Monarch competition in 2012.

Among the 20 he will be facing are Faye-Ann Lyons-Alvarez, her father SuperBlue, Iwer George, and Skinny Fabulous of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The majority of the semi-finalists are from Trinidad and Tobago, with the other competitors coming from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Barbados.
