The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 1992 Calypso Monarch, Joseph “Invader No. 3” Hughes.
Invader No. 3 was not only a Calypso Monarch but a stalwart of the calypso fraternity, whose vision and leadership helped shape one of Barbados’ most iconic tents, the House of Soca. From 1981 to 1992, he guided what was then called Jah Jah House of Soca and firmly established it as the “House of real kaiso.” Under his stewardship, the tent became a training ground for calypsonians, nurturing talents such as Adonijah, Tassa, the late Smokey Burke, Serenader, and Kid Site. He took the Pic-O-De-Crop crown in 1992, singing “Time” and “How Yuh Feel”.
Even after handing over leadership of the House of Soca in 2003, Invader No. 3 never stepped away from the art form. He remained actively involved in the background writing, mentoring, and fostering important relationships with Trinidadian writers to ensure that the new generation of House of Soca performers remained strong and relevant.
Beyond the stage, Invader No. 3 also made significant contributions to commentary and broadcasting, lending his voice and deep knowledge of the music to the Junior Monarch and Pic-O-De-Crop competitions. His insights enriched the experience for both audiences and performers alike.
Outside of calypso, Joseph Hughes was a jeweller and an educator of Spanish, having taught at the Barbados Community College in his earlier years. His legacy is therefore not only embedded in the
cultural life of the nation but also in the academic and professional development of countless Barbadians.
The Board of Management and staff of the NCF extend sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Hughes, and to the entire calypso fraternity. His artistry, leadership, and mentorship have left an indelible mark on Barbados’ cultural landscape. (PR)
