Background

Sustainability Coordinator

1. Background: CARIFESTA XV, to be hosted in Barbados in 2025, will build upon previous sustainability efforts to set a new benchmark for environmentally responsible cultural festivals in the Caribbean. The Sustainability Coordinator will be responsible for designing, executing, and monitoring the festival’s sustainability programme. This role will focus on reducing the festival’s environmental impact while promoting climate-conscious behavior and ensuring alignment with national sustainability policies and goals.

2. Objectives of the Role: The Sustainability Coordinator will:

  • Oversee the planning and execution of CARIFESTA XV’s sustainability initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental standards, policies, and best practices.
  • Facilitate partnerships with NGOs, government agencies, and private sector entities.
  • Promote eco-conscious behavior among stakeholders, participants, and attendees.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on the sustainability outcomes of the festival.

3. Key Responsibilities:

  • Programme Implementation: Lead the execution of the sustainability strategy, including renewable energy integration, waste management, and carbon offsetting initiatives.
  • Sustainable Procurement: Ensure all festival procurement adheres to eco-friendly and sustainable guidelines, particularly in signage, materials, and infrastructure.
  • Green Team Management: Recruit, train, and manage the Green Team Ambassadors. Deploy them at assigned venues to support messaging, recycling, and cleanup efforts alongside service providers.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain partnerships with key agencies, including the Barbados Future Trust, Sanitation Service Authority, and private sector organizations such as Berger Paints.
  • Event Coordination: Collaborate with the We Gatherin’ Parish Organizing Committee in St. Andrew to integrate sustainability into their marquee event.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Work with the communications team to promote sustainability initiatives, encouraging public participation in waste reduction and responsible environmental behavior.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Track sustainability metrics, document outcomes, and provide post-festival reports with recommendations for future events.

5. Reporting & Accountability: The Sustainability Coordinator will report to the CARIFESTA XV Organizing Committee and work closely with the logistics, operations, and communications teams. Regular progress updates will be required, along with a comprehensive post-event impact report.

6. Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience in sustainability, environmental management, or event planning.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage teams and coordinate multiple stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of climate action initiatives and best practices in green events.
  • Excellent communication and public engagement skills.

The Sustainability Coordinator will play a critical role in embedding sustainability within CARIFESTA XV, ensuring that the festival not only celebrates Caribbean culture but also champions environmental responsibility. By fostering strategic partnerships, managing green initiatives, and engaging the public, this role will contribute to a lasting legacy of sustainable event planning in the region.
