The National Cultural Foundation’s (NCF) many cultural development programmes will be on full display at the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent set for the three City Squares in Bridgetown – Golden Square Freedom ParkNational Heroes Square and Independence Square, on Saturday July 6.Insistent on preserving as many of the culturally relevant practices, the NCF introduced workshops and competitions in the schools under the Indigenous Cultural Heritage (ICH) programme.As the action gets started at 9 a.m. in Independence Square, patrons can visit the Cultural Village where the finals of the ICH primary and secondary schools Potta and Warri competitions, as well as the Maypole and Landship competitions, will be staged. Potta and Warri are variations of many different ‘pit and pebble’ games played to this day across Africa.



In addition, those attending the Crop Over Festival’s official launch event will be treated to special presentations in Golden Square as part of the Cultural Village by the popular Cyptones of the St. Cyprian’s Boys’ School, the Old Bajan Folk Choir, the Haynesville Youth Group and the Israel Lovell Foundation.Also among those showcasing their talent with energetic performances will be the Pinelands Creative WorkshopDancin’ Africa, the 2023 Scotiabank Junior Monarchs Shontae Tae Alleyne-Clarke and Sakarah, the 2023 Pic-O-De-Crop Monarch iWeb performing his winning tune, Brain.



If those were not enough, the Cultural Village will also feature stick licking, African dances, folk dances, tuk band performances and DJ music.During the afternoon, the NCF will also launch and distribute the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Colouring Book.
Telecommunications company Digicel Barbados is again giving its corporate support to the staging of the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent.The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Natalie Abrahams emphasised Digicel’s commitment to promoting the arts and cultural expression in Barbados.   In the Traders’ Marketplace patrons can purchase items from the 100 percent Bajan Entrepreneurs’ offering. (PR)
