Those attending the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent this Saturday, July 6, across the three City squares – Golden Square Freedom Park, National Heroes Square and Independence Square in Bridgetown, will be taken back in time in a mesmerising selection of the games, the food, the music, the dances, and other cultural experiences of Barbados. Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) Carol Roberts and her team led by Event Planner Karen Pestaina, have pulled out all the stops to launch Crop Over 2024 with an unforgettable mix of pomp, pageantry and culture. One of the showcases of this year’s Opening Gala is the re-creation of several aspects of Crop Over’s beloved past. An exciting representation of this and the highly anticipated 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent are a promised highlight.Though the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent is free for the entire family, event goers will be treated to a priceless and invaluable day of activity as the Foundation officially starts Crop Over in its jubilee year. From the introduction of two parades that include the promenade of fancy dresses and the decorated cart parade, to the cultural showcases, demonstrations, workshops and live performances, Bridgetown will become a spectacle for all. The Barbados Police Service Band, which was originally formed in 1889, will add a special treat for patrons when for the first time in its 135-year history, the band will add steel pan to its ensemble.For those who celebrate the artistry of late band leader, artist, and the island’s first local newspaper-political cartoonist Winston Jordan, will have the opportunity to reminisce through his son Winslow Jordan.Jordan’s “Bajan Folk Art Project” will see the launch of some commissioned pieces including some from his father’s who was well known for capturing folk characters through art.  The Culture Village is expected to be another reservoir of Barbadian history and cultural experiences to which patrons will be attracted.As Pestaina pointed out: “When you attend the Digicel Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes & 50th Anniversary Calypso Tent, you are going to enjoy a rich collection of sights, sounds and tastes of our heritage and culture that will bring back memories and create new ones.” Demonstrations and WorkshopsDemonstrations – Caricatures, Jewellery from Natural Fibres, Drum Stringing, Traditional Basketry, Live Painting, and Drum Stringing.Workshops – Crochet Jewellery with recycled materials, Traditional Sweets, Introduction to Traditional Dolls from Natural Fibres, Introduction to Patchwork (Sashiko), Tie & Dye, and Traditional Sweets including no-bake Coconut Sugar Cakes. |
