Government Commemorates the Day of National Significance with the Folk Concert

The Government will once again commemorate the Day of National Significance through the National Cultural Foundation’s production of the Crop Over Folk Concert.  The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Commission for Pan African Affairs have played a pivotal role in the production of this important heritage event from its embryonic stages.

This folk theatrical performance entitled “The House of Landship” will represent a reflection on some of the ways in which we have progressed from Emancipation to Independence, and will pay a specific tribute to the iconic organisation “The Barbados Landship” and its contribution to the social development of this nation over the last 150 years.  It is the main event of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Commission for Pan African Affairs to commemorate the Day of National Significance, Friday July 26, 2013.

In addition to recognising their 150th anniversary, Writer and Director Winston Farrell, chose the Barbados Landship because of its significant contribution to Barbados’ social landscape, especially in the early post-emancipation period and during the time of the 1937 riots when social conditions were extremely poor.  They provided a ‘social security net’ when the country lacked such services.

The Landship at its most powerful addressed a real need among the people and has been one of the major contributors in shaping so many of the social conditions we enjoy today.

The 2013 Crop Over Folk Concert “The House of Landship” is also made possible through the kind assistance of the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. and the City of Bridgetown (COB) Credit Union who have both recognised the importance of preserving our heritage and are happy to be involved.
