NIFCA 2026 Celebrates Barbados at 60

As Barbados marks 60 years of Independence and five years as a Republic, the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) is once again calling on the country’s creatives to step forward, share their talents and become part of the celebration.

For more than five decades, NIFCA has provided a national platform for Barbadians and residents of Barbados to express themselves through the arts. In 2026, that opportunity takes on added significance, as the festival unfolds during a milestone year in the nation’s history.

From the written word and visual expression to music, dance, theatre, film and culinary creativity, NIFCA continues to showcase the breadth of talent found across Barbados while giving both emerging and established creatives an opportunity to develop their craft and have their work recognised.

Chief Executive Officer of the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts, said the festival remains an important space for people at every stage of their creative journey.

“NIFCA is the stage on which Barbadians and residents of Barbados can show off their God-given talents. Whether they’ve been formally trained, whether it is a hobby that they’re passionate about in any of their lives. It is where we celebrate the very best of Barbados during the period of our Independence celebration,” Roberts said.

Chief Cultural Officer Andrea Wells also pointed to new opportunities available to creatives during this year’s milestone season.

“NIFCA 2026 is coming with lots of great avenues for creatives to celebrate our 60th anniversary of Independence! New prizes are on offer by the Ministry of the Environment and a new prize by Mission Barbados for eligible entries to claim. Quality artistic works can also make great statements about matters of national concern and earn recognition for these. We invite all creatives to sign up now,” Wells said.

That invitation extends across generations.

Young writers can test their creativity through the Junior Prose and Poetry Competition, while adult writers have the opportunity to enter the Literary Arts competition. Filmmakers and visual artists can tell Barbadian stories through moving images, photography, fine art and craft, while cooks can bring flavour and imagination to the Culinary Arts competition.

On the performing arts stage, musicians, dancers, actors and multidisciplinary performers will once again have the opportunity to present their work before audiences and adjudicators through the various junior and non-professional categories.

Schools, community organisations, groups and individuals are all encouraged to participate, reinforcing NIFCA’s role as one of the country’s broadest celebrations of artistic expression.

With Barbados commemorating six decades as an independent nation, the 2026 festival also presents an opportunity for creatives to reflect on the country’s journey, explore its identity and traditions, and imagine what Barbados can become in the decades ahead.

Whether it is a first attempt at entering a national competition, the continuation of a lifelong passion or another step in an established artistic career, NIFCA 2026 offers creatives the chance to add their own voice to a significant year for Barbados.
