Background

The stage is set for a weekend of extraordinary local talent as the 2025 NIFCA Performing Arts Semi-Finals take over The Combermere School from Friday, October 10 to Sunday, October 12.

Each evening from 6 p.m., audiences will experience an exciting mix of dance, theatre and music, featuring both fresh faces and familiar favourites from across Barbados. The three-night showcase represents one of the most anticipated segments of the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA), offering performers the opportunity to qualify for the Finals later this month.

From powerful spoken word and inspiring dramatic monologues to stirring choreography and soulful steel pan, this year’s Semi-Finals promise something for everyone. The event continues to affirm NIFCA’s legacy as the island’s leading platform for discovering and celebrating Barbadian creativity.

Friday’s opening night will feature a vibrant first round of performances. Highlights include the Christ Church Foundation School Steel Orchestra, setting the tone with energetic arrangements; the graceful movements of Kendra Leacock in her self-choreographed piece *Gratitude*; and the expressive storytelling of Kaleah Thompson and Malachi Hope, whose theatrical works blend social commentary with emotional honesty.

The excitement continues on Saturday evening with the soulful playing of the St Cyprian’s Boys’ School Band and powerful dance interpretations from Pearls Dance Academy, Covenant Dance School, and the Haynesville Youth Club. The night’s theatre entries, including Lucius Louis’ *Mental Calamity* and Diara Springer’s *A Seat at De Table*, promise to engage audiences with thought-provoking messages about mental health, faith and resilience.

Sunday evening will bring the Semi-Finals to a close in grand style. Performances will range from the rhythmic storytelling of the Haynesville Youth Group’s *Bajan Tuk Band Music Study* to the dynamic artistry of Dancin’ Africa in *Still Bout Hey*. The Sharon Primary School Dancers, Ashley Serieux, and Jacqueline Norville will also take the stage, bringing stories of strength, identity and hope to life through movement and verse. The festival’s closing moments will feature the Lodge School Steel Orchestra and Powerhouse Academy of the Arts, ensuring the weekend ends on a note of rhythm and unity.

The NIFCA Performing Arts Semi-Finals are more than a competition; they are a celebration of culture, community and expression. Each performance reflects the dedication and diversity of the island’s creative sector — from school groups exploring heritage through dance to solo artists using the stage to challenge perceptions or honour faith and family.

Audiences can expect a rich blend of genres and generations, with participants ranging from primary-school students to veteran performers who have graced NIFCA stages for decades. The variety of themes — identity, nationhood, social justice and spirituality — demonstrates how the arts continue to mirror the heartbeat of Barbadian life.

The event also underscores NIFCA’s commitment to nurturing creativity at every level. Whether in the development of new choreographers and directors or through the mentorship of younger performers, the Semi-Finals remain a vital space for artistic growth.

Admission to all three nights is $15 for adults and $5 for children, and patrons are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating. The public is reminded that the NIFCA Performing Arts Semi-Finals is a competition, and in an effort to minimise distractions for the performers, children under 3 years of age are not allowed in the auditorium. Each evening begins promptly at 6 p.m. at The Combermere School, where audiences can expect a family-friendly atmosphere filled with artistry, emotion and national pride.

As Barbados continues its countdown to the NIFCA Finals, the Performing Arts Semi-Finals stand as a vibrant reminder that the island’s creative spirit is as strong and inspiring as ever. (PR)
