Background

Twenty-four bands, colourful costumes and a full programme of family entertainment await patrons at the National Botanical Gardens.

Barbados’ youngest masqueraders are preparing to fill the road with colour, creativity and cultural pride when The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust & AffinityPlus Junior Kadooment returns on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

More than simply a parade, Junior Kadooment is an opportunity for the public to celebrate the talent, imagination and dedication of the children who are helping to carry Barbados’ masquerade traditions into the future.

This year, 24 registered bands will take part in the event, including five school and community groups: Shirley Chisholm Primary School, Erdiston Primary School, St Giles Primary School, Westbury Primary School and Weston United Stars Community. Their presentations will explore themes inspired by Barbadian heritage, music, folklore, science, technology, climate awareness and visions of the future. The parade will also feature Individuals, Couples, Kings, Queens and Flag Persons, creating a spectacular showcase of costume design, performance and artistic expression.

Behind every costume is a community of people committed to the development of Barbados’ young creatives. Band leaders, designers, teachers, parents and volunteers have worked together to provide the children with an experience that encourages discipline, teamwork, confidence and a deeper appreciation of their culture.

Their work deserves to be seen, celebrated and supported.

Families, cultural enthusiasts and members of the wider public are therefore encouraged to come out in their numbers and give the young masqueraders the enthusiastic reception they deserve.

From the moment the parade begins, spectators can expect an exciting display of movement, music and colour. Six DJ stations and music trucks will provide continuous entertainment along the route, ensuring that both the masqueraders and the audience remain fully immersed in the celebration.

The excitement will continue beyond the parade.

The National Botanical Gardens will be transformed into a family-friendly entertainment space, with a dedicated Party Zone featuring live performances, jumping tents, mega rides and other activities. Former Junior Monarch contestants and specially invited performers will also take the stage, adding even more energy to the day’s programme.

Young patrons will be able to enjoy Fun Zones offering face painting, interactive games and other activities. Traditional characters and Tuk Bands will also form part of the experience, ensuring that the spirit and sound of Barbadian culture remain at the centre of the festivities.

Families will have access to a variety of local food options, while photo opportunities positioned throughout the venue will allow patrons to capture lasting memories of the occasion.

Careful attention is also being placed on the safety and comfort of the young participants. Water stations, water carts and dedicated cool-down areas will be provided to help the masqueraders remain hydrated and comfortable throughout the event.

Every element of Junior Kadooment 2026 has been designed to provide children and families with an experience that is safe, enjoyable, educational and culturally enriching.

The event is also a powerful reminder that Barbados’ cultural traditions will only remain strong when the next generation is given meaningful opportunities to participate in them. Junior Kadooment allows children to do more than wear a costume. It allows them to learn about design, music, movement, performance and the stories that have shaped Barbadian identity.

Public support is an important part of that experience.

When spectators line the route, applaud the bands and celebrate the children, they are showing the young participants that their hard work matters. They are also supporting the teachers, designers, band leaders, sponsors, parents and volunteers who continue to invest their time and resources in the development of junior masquerade.

The celebration will continue from 3:30 p.m. with the Junior Kadooment Afterparty at the National Botanical Gardens. Patrons can look forward to live performances from newly crowned Party Monarch double champion Mikey, along with Grateful Co, Nikita and Ross, bringing an energetic close to a day dedicated to children, culture and family entertainment.

On Saturday, July 18, make Junior Kadooment part of your family’s Crop Over experience.

Come for the costumes. Come for the music. Come for the entertainment.

Most importantly, come out and support the children as they proudly take their place on the road and help to write the next chapter of Barbados’ cultural story.
