While this is only the second year for the Massy Foundation’s support of these developmental awards, it builds upon Massy’s sponsorship over the previous three years, so collectively this has been a five year partnership for the Massy name.
Ann Hewitt, Director of Massy Foundation commended the NCF for the foresight over the past eight years in recognising that behind-the-scene creative practitioners are also as equally important and deserving of acknowledgement as their on-stage counterparts. Hewitt said, “Generally, we do not get to appreciate what happens beyond the stage, but the creative seed must be planted before that dance, dramatic presentation or melodic rendition is even birthed. Thus, there is a symbiotic relationship between the creator and the performer.”
Since the establishment of the NIFCA Creators’ Prizes, several recipients of these awards have used these grants to hone their skills and further develop themselves in their respective disciplines of theatre, music and dance, investing directly in equipment and other technical resources to support their craft, enrolling in courses or workshops overseas in their particular art form.
With the issuance of these prizes Massy and the Massy Foundation have contributed in excess of $50000 towards these scholarships/awards. Artistes like three-time winner, Kenneth “Jack” Lewis and Tyrone Marshall have been awarded for script writing; for originality in musical composition, two-time winner – Marlon Legall, Steve Sobers and Patrice Gill were the beneficiaries and in choreography and/or artistic direction in dance it was Olivia Hall, ADL Adrenalin, Aisha Commissiong and Element.
