The Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch competition takes place during Barbados’ largest annual national festival, Crop-Over. It is a developmental programme that celebrates the art of calypso and is designed to showcase the young talented performers who may become rising stars in the profession.

However, the longstanding Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch competition also offers a variety of lifelong learning experiences. Workshops are conducted around subjects that are relevant to these young performers. The successful results of these workshops are seen at the Finals. The young artists get the opportunity to challenge themselves personally and artistically in a supportive and exciting environment.  They are also taught vital performance skills for building confidence and personal development.

At the National Cultural Foundation this event is known as a developmental programme”, as the artists are given an opportunity to explore a wide range of topics, but are also coached the correct techniques for the genre of calypso. They learn performance and microphone techniques, interview preparations and most satisfying the opportunities they get to use the skills they have gained to perform at many events throughout the year.
