Deep Void In The Artistic Community

Myrna Squires has been described by many who have walked the corridors of the National Cultural Foundation as a superb artist, a legend, kind hearted, charming, sincere with a bubbly and vivacious personality – to know her is to love her.  She had an uncanny ability to find the humour in almost anything.

As the organisation charged with the preservation and development of culture on the local landscape, we revere the many talented men and women who have helped to sculpt the cultural industries in Barbados.

Myrna’s contribution to the arts spans decades, dating back to her days at Queen’s College under the tutelage of dramatist Daphne Joseph-Hackett.  Throughout her illustrious career as an actress and singer, she has been an inspiration for many practitioners.  The performing arts was not her only profession, but it was her passion – she lived and breathed it!

Cranston Browne, Chief Executive Officer, NCF remarked that he was reminded of a very fitting quotation – It is not the length of life, but the depth of life lived.  Her passing has left a deep void, especially in the local theatre arts fraternity, but those memories of laughter will live on in our hearts.

During the Crop Over Planning meeting on Tuesday, March 17, the NCF team observed a moment of silence in reflection on her life.
